Biography

Sam practices principally in criminal law, where he has developed of wide-ranging practice in all manner of criminal offences, in particular, serious indictable crime.

Sam has gained particular experience in homicides (including serious driving offences), serious drug offences, frauds and offences involving allegations of violence.

Since coming to the bar, Sam has regularly appeared in a wide variety of criminal cases, including:

  • Appeals to the Court of Appeal (interlocutory, conviction and sentence);
  • Trials and pleas of guilty in the Supreme Court and in County Court of Victoria;
  • Disciplinary matters at various tribunals such as the AFL Tribunal, Racing Victoria Appeals Tribunal, in addition to VCAT and the AAT; and
  • Bail applications, pleas, contested hearings and contested committals in the Magistrates’ Court.

In addition to his criminal practice Sam also appears in Occupational Health & Safety matters and provides advice to companies and individuals in this area .

Further, Sam accepts briefs in Judicial Review Proceedings, Asset Confiscation Matters and other quasi-criminal matters such as disciplinary tribunals.

Since 2017 Sam has been included in Doyle’s Guide list of Leading / Recommended Criminal Law Junior Counsel in Victoria.

Sam also has a love of sport and regularly appears for the Richmond Football Club at the AFL tribunal. Sam holds an Indictable Crime Certificate (IIC), is on the VLA Criminal Trial Preferred Barrister List and is a member of the Criminal Bar Association.
