Matthew accepts briefs in criminal and quasi-criminal matters.
Before coming to the Bar, Matthew was solicitor-advocate for six years at Victoria Legal Aid, working across the Indictable Crime and Appeals and Strategic Litigation teams.
Matthew regularly appeared in criminal proceedings in the Magistrates’ Court, County Court and Supreme Court, appearing in bail applications, pleas, contravention hearings, committal proceedings, appeals, and contests.
Matthew had conduct of a broad range of summary and indictable matters whilst in the Indictable Crime team at Victoria Legal Aid. He has instructed in trials involving homicides, serious violent offences, sexual offences, drug offences, and dishonesty offences. He also had carriage of numerous matters that proceeded under the Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act 1997.
Matthew has extensive experience appearing for respondents in applications brought under the Serious Offenders Act 2018. Whilst at Victoria Legal Aid he delivered professional legal education seminars for solicitors regarding proper carriage of these matters on behalf of offenders.
Whilst working in Victoria Legal Aid’s Appeals and Strategic Litigation team he regularly provided written legal advice to the organisation regarding the merits of various appeals to the Court of Appeal and/or High Court. Whilst in this team, Matthew had conduct of numerous appeals against sentence and/or conviction to the Court of Appeal, as well as special leave applications to the High Court.
From 2017 until his admission, Matthew was Associate to his Honour Judge Dean at the County Court of Victoria.
