Ilya is an experienced criminal lawyer who accepts briefs to appear and advise in criminal and quasi-criminal matters. Ilya accepts briefs for both the Defence and Prosecution.
Prior to joining the Bar, Ilya was a Senior Solicitor at the Office of Public Prosecutions. In this role, he was responsible for preparing complex and high-profile criminal proceedings for trial, including cases involving homicide, sexual, driving and fraud offences.
Before this, Ilya was a solicitor at the Victorian Government Solicitor’s Office, where he worked on significant quasi-criminal and civil litigation on behalf of the State of Victoria. At the VGSO, Ilya’s practice included tortious claims, proceedings relating to police powers and conduct, and proceedings conducted under the Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act 1997.
Ilya has a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) with a Specialisation in Australian Indigenous Studies from the University of Melbourne and a Juris Doctor from Monash University. During his Juris Doctor, Ilya received the County Court Award for outstanding achievement in Principles of Criminal Law and Procedure.
